Six AM. Homeless Pete stirs on the bench, the NY Times rustling in time with the sporadic birdsong. The sky is lightening to that pale, clear blue that is seen just before the sun rises. Half an hour later, the cop makes his rounds, knocking Homeless Pete around a bit. Pete mumbles a swearword at the cop and folds up yesterday's edition of the Times, screaming about an oil spill in the gulf coast. He heads out through the park's back entrance, pausing to piss in the bed of tiger lilies. Then, for a few precious seconds, the entire park pauses to collect itself for Saturday the twentieth of May.

Speeding down the highway. He was loving this trip. Christmas break oh eight! Johnny and Brian were driving back from Columbus, OH where their group of friends had decided to spend break. The two seniors had been roommates on the trip and had known each other since sophomore year, when Brian had transferred and joined the football team. Now they were on their way back through Ohio to Illinois in the deadest part of the country. He looked over at his passenger. Hah, sound asleep. Johnny smiled a little as he turned toward the road.
